Light is visible light, which is the electromagnetic wave that the human eye can feel. The wavelength of visible light is 0.38-0.78 μ m. Electromagnetic waves shorter than 0.38 microns and longer than 0.78 microns can not be felt by human eyes. An electromagnetic wave longer than 0.78 microns lies outside the red of the visible light spectrum and is called infrared. Infrared radiation, also known as infrared radiation, refers to electromagnetic waves with a wavelength of 0.78~1000 microns. The part with a wavelength of 0.78~2.0 μ m is called near-infrared, and the part with a wavelength of 2.0~1000 μ m is called thermal infrared.

Definition of light wave

Photographs are obtained from camera imaging, and television images are obtained from television camera imaging, both of which are visible light imaging. In nature, all objects can radiate infrared rays, so the infrared difference between the target itself and the background can be measured by the detector and different infrared images can be obtained. The image formed by thermal infrared is called a thermal image. The thermal image of the target is different from the visible light image of the target. It is not the visible light image of the target that can be seen by the human eye, but the temperature distribution image of the target surface. In other words, infrared thermal imaging makes the human eye unable to directly see the surface temperature distribution of the target and becomes the thermal image that can be seen by the human eye and represents the temperature distribution of the target surface.

Development of thermal imaging technology

Since the Second World War, thermal imaging technology has been applied in the military. Because this instrument works by thermal radiation, it can let soldiers clearly see the enemy's whereabouts through the dark battlefield. Because it is a passive receiving system, it is safer and more covert than visible light devices such as radio radar.

Thermal imaging technology has been widely used in daily life. An important application is to diagnose diseases. As we all know, when inflammation occurs in a certain part, the body temperature will rise. Measuring the body temperature can determine whether there is inflammation, but it can not determine the specific location of the inflammation. The thermal imager can directly give the distribution map of the human body temperature field. By comparing the heat map of the lesion with the normal heat map, the lesion can be diagnosed from the abnormal changes. Thermal imaging technology can also be used in the operating room. When the blood flows through the newly placed artery, the color of the artery on the thermal imager changes from gray to white. Under normal circumstances, it is difficult to observe whether the blood vessel is unblocked with the naked eye.

Similar to the diagnosis of diseases, electrical components of high-voltage power transmission and transformation, train axle box, circuit board, and other faults can also be directly observed and checked by a thermal imager to avoid the loss caused by the fault.

Thermal imaging technology can also help scientists further explore the mysteries of the universe.
